This week’s controlled text passage has an updated format that I’m excited about. It now includes a Words to Know section, along with quick comprehension questions at the end.

🪓 Dan

Dan did not quit.

Back then, no man had cut a path to the west.

The steep hills went on and on.

Most men did not go past them.

To them, that was the end of the land.

Dan was not most men.

Dan was ⭐ intrepid.

He went into the hills when he was just a kid.

He could track elk and fox in the deep hills.

In the wild hills, Dan felt freedom.

He could tell which spots let a man pass.

Then Dan got a fantastic plan.

He would cut a path in the gap to open the west.

Past the gap was a big continent.

The gap sat between two steep hills.

It was a big problem. No man had done it.

The approach to the gap was steep.

Dan led a band of men into the gap.

Deep in the gap, the sun did not get in.

They began to cut a path, bit by bit.

The trip was bad and the wind was cold.

Some men did not come back.

A man could fall into ⭐ despair.

But Dan did not quit, not even then.

At last, they got past the gap.

They had cut a long road to the west.

Then lots and lots of men went west on Dan’s road.

Dan won the ⭐ esteem of the land.

Dan did not quit.

⭐ intrepid — Intrepid is bold. A bold man will go in when the rest hang back.

⭐ despair — Despair is when it all goes bad and a man wants to give up.

⭐ esteem — Esteem is respect.

🎨 Van Gogh

Van Gogh did not quit.

Back then, he did not sell much.

He put 🌟 stars and thick 🎨 paint on it.

On and on he went.

He painted the way the sky felt.

It was not just the sky he could see from his window.

It was the sky in his mind.

He had no clue what would happen next.

Then, lots of people began to see his paintings.

Shackleton was a brave man.

The men had to get off the ship.

They had a problem and took what they had.

They camped on the frozen ice.

The men had to wait.

Shackleton kept the men safe.

He was a strong captain.

He did not panic.

He took a small group to get help.

They went across the sea.

The trip was long and full of risk.

At last, they got help.

Shackleton went back for his men.

All the men were safe.

It was a hard trip, but no man was lost.

It is the coldest place on the planet.
It is also the windiest and the driest.

If you travel there, you must bundle up very well.

Antarctica is the fifth largest continent.
It is covered with thick layers of frozen water.

It is also known as a desert.

A desert is not always hot.
A desert is any place with very little precipitation.

Precipitation means rain or snow.

Some deserts have sand and heat.
But Antarctica is cold and frozen.

The Sahara Desert gets about three inches of rain each year.
Antarctica gets even less than that.

In winter, temperatures can drop far below zero.
Strong winds make the cold feel even harsher.

In summer, the temperature may rise to about thirty-two degrees.
This is still very cold for most people.

A massive frozen sheet covers most of the land.
It is the largest single body of frozen water on Earth.

There is even an active volcano in Antarctica.
It is called Mount Erebus.

Some simple plant life can survive there.
These include moss, lichen, and algae.

Animals have also adapted to this environment.
Penguins are one of the most well-known species.

In the surrounding ocean, there are seals and whales.
Many forms of marine life thrive in these waters.

Scientists from many countries travel to Antarctica.
They study weather patterns, climate change, and even space rocks.

Antarctica is a harsh and challenging place.
Yet there is still so much left to discover.

But her path was not direct.

She kept testing out many different jobs.
She tried one position, then another position, and then another.

In fact, she had more than twenty jobs.

Some positions were not a good fit.
But each one helped her discover important information about herself.

She discovered she was strong in communication with people.
She discovered she had skill in sales and quick decision making.

Little by little, she began to recognize her strengths.

One day, she earned her first real payment.

She spent almost all of it on a coat.

It seemed extravagant.

But when she put it on, she felt strong and in control.
She felt like the kind of person she wanted to become.
She could be competitive and win.

Later, she developed a new idea.

She created video tapes of homes for sale.
She invested a large amount of money to produce them.

She expected people to use them.

They did not.

The tapes remained unused.

No one distributed them.

It was a complete failure.

Most people would stop after that result.

She did not.

At that time, the internet was in its infancy.

She took the same tapes
and transferred them to an online format.

Now people could view the homes
from distant locations.

This time, she was successful.

Her idea led to a revolution in how homes were marketed.

Her failure became her most important step.

Her path was not direct.

But it led her forward.

🌱 The Passage

Some people make a comment about culture and do not think with care.

They may assume that their view is correct, but they do not reflect on the full picture.

Each culture has a rich structure and a deep nature.

It is not simple or small. It is made of custom, value, and shared history.

When a person makes a quick statement, it can cause tension or upset.

The other person may feel that their culture was not seen with respect.

At the same time, the person who made the comment may not have bad intent.

They may not have had enough exposure to that culture.

They may have heard a message and did not stop to reflect on it.

This does not excuse the mistake, but it can help us respond with care.

We can ask: What did the person mean? What did they not yet understand?

A calm response can guide the person to better understanding.

It is more helpful to pause and reflect before we respond.

We can think about how our words may affect others.

A kind and thoughtful response shows respect and mature behavior.

When we take time to listen and reflect, we build better connection.

We also grow in our own understanding.

We can learn from each other when we listen with care.

That is how we build a safe and respectful community.
