No man had done it.</p><p>The approach to the gap was steep.</p><p>Dan led a band of men into the gap.</p><p>Deep in the gap, the sun did not get in.</p><p>They began to cut a path, bit by bit.</p><p>The trip was bad and the wind was cold.</p><p>Some men did not come back.</p><p>A man could fall into &#11088; despair.</p><p>But Dan did not quit, not even then.</p><p>At last, they got past the gap.</p><p>They had cut a long road to the west.</p><p>Then lots and lots of men went west on Dan&#8217;s road.</p><p>Dan won the &#11088; esteem of the land.</p><p>Dan did not quit.</p><p>&#11088; Words to Know</p><p>&#11088; intrepid &#8212; Intrepid is bold. It is made of custom, value, and shared history.</p><p>When a person makes a quick statement, it can cause tension or upset.</p><p>The other person may feel that their culture was not seen with respect.</p><p>At the same time, the person who made the comment may not have bad intent.</p><p>They may not have had enough exposure to that culture.</p><p>They may have heard a message and did not stop to reflect on it.</p><p>This does not excuse the mistake, but it can help us respond with care.</p><p>We can ask: What did the person mean?
